The triennial 22nd International Seaweed Symposium was held in Copenhagen, Denmark from the 19th to 24th June 2016 and attended by Marinova CEO, Mr Paul Garrott, and Operations Manager, Dr Damien Stringer.

Dr Stringer delivered two presentations on behalf of Marinova, entitled: ‘Fucoidan: Connecting analysis and bioactivity’ and ‘Fucoidan and cancer: research and clinical interaction studies’. These were presented amongst a program that featured broad ranging research, from seaweed ecology through to bioactive substances, biofuels and seaweeds for food and feed.

“It was again very pleasing to see the momentum building for seaweed use in food and medicine,” noted Dr Stringer. “The continuing research into the benefits of seaweeds and their bioactive substances bodes well for their expanded use into the future.”

The conference brought together eminent seaweed scientists and industry experts from across the globe, attended by over 450 delegates. Also included in the program was an interesting Q&A session, featuring renowned chef René Redzepi, of two-Michelin-star restaurant NOMA. Mr Redzepi highlighted the need for wider incorporation of seaweeds into children’s’ diets, for improved health and nutrition.

The International Seaweed Symposium is held under the auspices of the International Seaweed Association (ISA) – a global organisation dedicated to the promotion of research and development of seaweed and seaweed products. Marinova is a proud sponsor of the ISA and looks forward to the 23rd Symposia, which is to be held in Korea in 2019.
