Clinical study highlights Maritech® Bright

A recent study incorporated high purity fucoidan (Maritech® Bright, Fucus vesiculosus extract) into a serum spray, along with Ulva lactuca extract and ectoin, and evaluated the efficacy of the spray on facial skin. The spray demonstrated an increase in hydration and a reduction in wrinkles, in addition to the maintenance of skin barrier function.

Conducted in Europe, the study used a split face design dermatological evaluation on 33 participants. Study participants had a mean age of 50 and all showed visible signs of ageing. Instrumental and subjective efficacy tests compared a combination of serum spray and moisturiser with a moisturiser alone. Skin hydration was 17% higher for the combined serum and moisturiser treatment compared to the moisturiser alone. Similarly, the roughness of the skin (wrinkle effect) was reduced by 17% for the combined treatment compared to the moisturiser alone after 28 days of treatment. The study also showed that the combined treatment over this period significantly reduced pH of the skin - which may in turn assist in improving skin barrier function.

Subjective questionnaires demonstrated that study participants experienced far more favorable results using the combined serum spray and moisturiser treatment than the moisturiser alone. Improved skin luminosity and hydration was noted by 86% of participants, and 69% of participants observed a reduction in skin spots and smoother wrinkles. A total of 72% of subjects recorded their skin feeling plumper.  

The study concluded that ‘the marine-derived compounds fucoidan, ulvans, and ectoin have hydrating and anti-wrinkle properties that make them effective ingredients for skincare products.’

The high purity fucoidan used in this research was the Fucus vesiculosus extract Maritech® Bright sourced from Marinova Pty Ltd.
