Global scientific interest in fucoidans continues to rise, with over 200 new peer reviewed papers published during 2021*.

Research into the potential of fucoidans to support human health began to notably increase in the 1970s, coinciding with the commercial availability of crude fucoidan extracts. By the end of the 1980s, the number of published peer-reviewed papers had risen by more than 14 times.

Global research momentum has continued to increase over the course of the last decade with almost 1500 papers exploring fucoidans being published over the 2011-2021 period alone.

In 2021, the top five research topics explored in published fucoidan studies were cancer, inflammation, immune health, digestive health and ageing.
